  • As parents, we want our children’s first experience with the Qur’an to be one of warmth, curiosity, and immediate understanding. We want them to feel that Allah is speaking directly to them. Surah Al-Fatihah: My First Tafsir is designed to be that essential first connection builder between your child and Allah, suitable for ages 7 and over.

While most children’s books simply retell stories, this is an authentic work of tafsir (explanation) made accessible. The book follows a loving dialogue between Shaykh Taqiuddin Ahmed and his eight-year-old student. Together, they navigate each verse of Surah Al-Fatihah, answering the big questions that children naturally ask. The ones that often leave adults searching for the right words.

This book is a sensory feast. Each page is illustrated with delightful, face-free watercolours by Eman Salem, specifically designed to excite wonder and reflection. It contains the Arabic text of the Surah, phonetic transliteration, English translation. For an even deeper connection, a QR code is included, allowing your child to listen to a beautiful recitation of the Surah by the Shaykh’s own granddaughter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tafsir too advanced for a child under 10?

We don’t think so. It is never too early to introduce the beauty of the Qur’an to children. This book is written as a warm conversation, using the exact vocabulary and tough questions an eight-year-old might use. It breaks down deep spiritual concepts into ideas that young children can grasp and build upon for their lifelong journey with the Qur’an.

My child is just starting to read. Is this suitable?

Yes. The layout is clear and spacious. It is perfect for reading together at bedtime, but simple enough for an emerging reader to explore on their own.

Does the book include the original Arabic?

Yes, this book has the Arabic, alongside a clear transliteration and English translation, so your child can follow along with their recitation. There is also a QR code so you can access a clear tajweed recitation by Shaykh Taqi’s own granddaughter.

How is this different from other Qur’an storybooks?

Most books retell historical stories. This book explains the meaning behind what we say in every single prayer, helping your child understand their daily connection to Allah, verse by verse.

Is it strong enough to be read everyday?

Yes, this is a high-quality book, with French flaps and premium paper to ensure it stands up to frequent use and remains a part of your family library for years.

Who was Shaykh Taqiuddin Ahmed?

Shaykh Dr. Taqiuddin Ahmed was a scholar of both the Islamic and worldly sciences holding a Master’s Degree in Islamic Law (Alimiyyah) and a PhD in Chemistry. Having spent the early years of his life developing and leading many large-scale industrial projects, he dedicated the last 30 plus years of his life almost exclusively to teaching and serving the Islamic community across North America. He served as the Imam and Director of Islamic Society of Pittsburgh as well as of Central New York (Syracuse) and later held the role of chaplaincy in New York State Penitentiary. Besides his official duties, the Shaikh continued to teach many of the Islamic Sciences privately including Aqeedah, Fiqh, Arabic, Tafseer, Hadith and Tazkiyyah. He passed away in 2023 leaving a lasting legacy of learning, piety and service to people. He is survived by his wife, five children and nine grandchildren.

Why are there budgies on every page?

We have tried to include plenty of actual details from the life of Shaykh Taqi as a tribute to his teachings and his gentle nature. He kept budgies and so we have included these on every page so your child can have some fun trying to spot these while also learning.
