  • Do you ever worry that while your son knows his rituals, he might lack the inner confidence to navigate the modern world with faith? It can be difficult for young boys to process their feelings or plan for their future without a clear guide. Often, they feel the weight of expectations but don’t yet have the tools to manage them.

My Best Self (Boys) is the practical companion your 10-14 year-old son needs to anchor him in his Muslim identity. Written by educator and poet Mariam Chaudhry, this journal is divided into two purposeful halves. The first half is a toolkit that introduces essential life skills, including the power of a growth mindset, establishing good habits, and turning to Allah.

The second half is a guided 40-day journalling experience. Here he can note down how he is feeling each day, cultivate a gratitude habit and reflect on a prompt that gets him to think about the world around him through an Islamic lens.

Together the two halves of the journal are designed to build his mental and spiritual strength and teach him the tools of emotional regulation and reflection that are necessary for the next generation of the Ummah to thrive.

The journal itself is a durable, high-quality spiral-bound hardback. It is designed to lie flat on a desk, making it easy and comfortable for daily writing and reflection.

Endorsements & Recognition

“My Best Self is a wonderful gift, and it really was a joy to see my 13 year old son use and value this without any hesitation. It is clearly written and constructed for ease of use, is very interactive and asks your young person about their thoughts, helps them to be inspired towards their goals. God bless the writer, who has harnessed the power of reflection for young men and I’d highly recommend this for a young boy – it is a treasure.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this just a secular self-help book with a few verses added?

Not at all. The entire framework is built on Islamic principles like tawakkul (reliance on Allah), du‘a (supplication) and shukr (gratitude). We believe that good mental health and a growth mindset are essential parts of our faith, helping us to serve Allah and the community more effectively.

My son isn’t really into writing. Will he actually use this?

This was designed for the reluctant reader and writer, and edited by a (critical!) teen boy to engage even the shortest of attentions. It has short chunks of text with illustrations throughout. The daily journalling prompts are clear and punchy. The spiral-bound format means he can flip it open easily and it stays open. For the really reluctant writers, we have even suggested that they can doodle on the “brain release” pages instead of long-form writing to allow them to express themselves without pressure.

Can he use this on his own, or do I need to help him?

It is written to be a personal journey he can take on his own. However, the toolkit section also encourages identifying a trusted adult to talk to, which can actually help open up better communication between you and your son.

Is a journal worth nearly ten pounds?

This is not simply a journal with prompts and lined spaces for your son to fill in. Half of the book is taken up by the toolkit section that is filled with guidance and advice based on Qur’an and Sunnah, with the experience of the writer. We think this is a small investment into helping our young people develop the tools they need to thrive in this ever complex world.

How does this help his deen?

We believe a boy who is confident, self-aware, and emotionally healthy is better equipped to practice his faith and become a qawwam (protector and maintainer) of tomorrow. By teaching him the importance of du‘a, shukr, and tawakkul as practical life tools, we ensure his connection to Allah is part of his daily routine, decision-making, and thought process.

My son is only 10. Is it too early to start a guided journal?

Not necessarily. If your child is starting to ask more complex questions about their identity or showing a desire for private space, they are ready. At 10, the toolkit section of the book acts as a proactive shield, giving them the resources for confidence before the pressures of the teenage years hit.

We are giving our son his first phone this year. Should I include this journal?

Yes, this is the ideal time to introduce this journal. The moment your son gains access to social media, he is hit with a flood of noise and information. Giving him the My Best Self journal alongside his first device provides a rock that anchors his faith and Muslim identity.

I’ve noticed a shift in my son’s behaviour. How will a journal help?

Adolescent pulling away is a natural search for independence. By giving him this journal you are offering him the resources to be independent and resilient. When he feels he doesn’t want to talk to you, he can share and process any emotions in his journal which keeps him rooted in Islam. It is designed to help him find his way to his Best Self.

Why 40 days?

It takes anywhere between 21 and 66 days to keep and maintain a habit in a way that is transformative for your life. We think that 40 days is a good length for a journal to keep your son’s interest engaged, be a sufficient amount of time to build a journalling habit, and become self-aware and confident as a result.

Who We Are

One of the First Islamic Publishers in the United Kingdom
Connecting English-speaking Muslims to the heart of their faith with authentic, accessible books.

At a time when there were limited faith-based resources to learn and teach Islam to the Muslim community in English, Afsar & Jamal-un-Nisa Siddiqui founded one of the first Islamic publishing houses in the UK. Leaving behind professional careers, they paved the way for future generations to enjoy a wide range of Islamic literature. Almost fifty years later, we continue to provide the highest quality books worldwide and support literacy charities.
