  • Do you see your daughter looking at a screen and then looking in the mirror with a sigh? It is harder than ever for young girls to feel good enough when they are bombarded with filtered images of perfect lives and faces. This pressure can make them lose sight of their unique, Allah-given beauty and potential.

My Best Self (Girls) is designed to be a safe, faith-based voice of truth in a noisy world for your 10-14 year old daughter. Written by educator and poet Mariam Chaudhry, this journal is divided into two purposeful halves. The first half is a toolkit that introduces essential life skills, including the power of a growth mindset, establishing good habits, and turning to Allah.

The second half is a guided 40-day journalling experience. Here she can note down how she is feeling each day, cultivate a gratitude habit and reflect on a prompt that gets her to think about the world through an Islamic lens. Many of the prompts subtly address the idea of filtered beauty and help girls understand that what they see on social media is often an illusion, not a standard to strive for.

Together the two halves of the journal help your daughter build an inner filter that protects her heart from comparison and helps her focus on becoming her best, most confident Muslim self.

The book is a beautiful, ribboned and tactile hardback, designed to be her friend through her exciting pre- and early teen years (ages 10-14).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a journal worth nearly ten pounds?

This is not simply a journal with prompts and lined spaces for your daughter to fill in. Half of the book is taken up by the toolkit section that is filled with guidance and advice based on Qur’an and Sunnah, with the experience of the writer. We think this is a small investment into helping our young people develop the tools they need to thrive in this ever complex world.

Is it written in a way that is easy to understand?

It feels like a conversation with an older, wiser sister or a mentor who gets it. The concepts are deep, but the words are simple.

My daughter is very busy with schoolwork. Will this be too much?

The first half is a guide she can read at her own pace, and the journal only takes a few minutes each day. She will find this a welcome space away from schoolwork or a screen to get to know herself better and build her confidence.

Can she use this on her own, or do I need to help her?

It is written to be a personal journey she can take on her own. However, the toolkit section also encourages identifying a trusted adult to talk to, which can actually help open up better communication between you and your daughter.

How does this help her deen?

We believe a girl who is confident, self-aware, and emotionally healthy is better equipped to practice her faith. By teaching her the importance of du‘a, shukr, and tawakkul as practical life tools, we make her connection to Allah a living part of her daily routine. This is the key that will help her put her Islamic knowledge into practice.

My daughter is only 10. Is it too early to start a guided journal?

Not necessarily. If your child is starting to ask more complex questions about their identity or showing a desire for private space, they are ready. At 10, the toolkit section of the book acts as a proactive shield, giving them the resources for confidence before the pressures of the teenage years hit.

We are giving our daughter her first phone this year. Should I include this journal?

Yes, this is the ideal time to introduce this journal. The moment your daughter gains access to social media, she is hit with a flood of noise and information. Giving her the My Best Self journal alongside her first device provides a rock that anchors her faith and Muslim identity.

I’ve noticed a shift in my daughter’s behaviour. How will a journal help?

Adolescent pulling away is a natural search for independence. By giving her this journal you are offering her the resources to be independent and resilient. When she feels she doesn’t want to talk to you, she can share and process any emotions in her journal which keeps her rooted in Islam. It is designed to help her find her way to her Best Self.

Why 40 days?

It takes anywhere between 21 and 66 days to keep and maintain a habit in a way that is transformative for your life. We think that 40 days is a good length for a journal to keep your daughter’s interest engaged, be a sufficient amount of time to build a journalling habit, and become self-aware and confident as a result.

Who We Are

One of the First Islamic Publishers in the United Kingdom
Connecting English-speaking Muslims to the heart of their faith with authentic, accessible books.

At a time when there were limited faith-based resources to learn and teach Islam to the Muslim community in English, Afsar & Jamal-un-Nisa Siddiqui founded one of the first Islamic publishing houses in the UK. Leaving behind professional careers, they paved the way for future generations to enjoy a wide range of Islamic literature. Almost fifty years later, we continue to provide the highest quality books worldwide and support literacy charities.
